"The allure of the hoop is real because it helps us remember the deep pleasure of being alive and free."

-Jaguar Mary

Something as simple as a childrens toy inspired me to play and be active. It has been a creative outlet that effortlessly brings a smile and joy to my everyday life.  I know that there will be plenty more wondrous experiences in store for me in Winnipeg and beyond. Thank you for taking the time to read about my hoop journey. If you have any questions or would like to get in contact, please send me a message.

Much Love,

I am Karrie Blackburn, certified Hoop Love Coach & founder of Kurrent Motion ~ A Movement In Hoops. My Hoop journey began during the summer of 2009, at a time in my life when I was overweight and unhappy.

While on a camping trip with friends, I was introduced to a lovely young woman who had four hula hoops. I admired how she spun and danced with them with such grace and ease. As any hooper would, she offered me a hoop to try. I remember noticing her hoops were much larger and heavier than the hoops from my childhood. After countless attempts, I was unable to keep the hoop going around my waist for more than a few rotations. This frustrated me greatly and I vowed to get my own hula hoop and master waist hooping before the end of that summer. Little did I know how much I would come to love my time spent in my hoop.

My first hoop was a children's hoop from Toys R Us. Unfortunately, it was much too small and light for me and I had an even more difficult time keep it going. In an effort to make it work, I covered it with duct tape to make it heavier, which helped somewhat but I still couldn't get it. Then I turned to YouTube. I watched several "How to Hula Hoop" tutorials and practiced daily. Finally after 2 weeks, I was able to keep the hoop up! Best of all I had lost 10 lbs, an added benefit to all that hooping. I was hooked! I watched tutorial after tutorial on new movements and cool tricks to master. I dedicated at least 5 minutes each day to my hoop practice. Often those 5 minutes extend to over an hour of hoop dancing with workout music in my home gym aka my living room with all my furniture pushed to the walls. Under 2 years later I had lost 75lbs (35kg), gained a talent, and discovered my passion. It gave me a new lease on life.

During the summer of 2011, a friend introduced me to the idea of Double Mini Hoops spun in the style of Poi. I recall laughing at the idea and thinking, "It would never work." Well I couldn't have been more wrong! I had purchased a couple of cheap hoops from the dollar store with the intention of giving them to my friend. However, I ended up playing with them and falling in love all over again with a new style of hooping. That friend, a master poi spinner, taught me basic poi moves which I translated to Mini hoops. This style of hooping is very unique to me and incredibly mesmerizing to watch. Before long I had a set of LED Mini Hoops; which were the inspiration for Kurrent Motion's logo.

Then I began to travel. In October 2011 I moved to Dublin, Ireland on a one year working holiday visa. This was when I discovered that there are Hula Hoopers all over the world. In April 2012, I attended the first annual Irish Hoop Convention. I had the pleasure of learning from the incredibly talented Gail O'Brien, Emma Kenna, and Steve Bags; superstars of the Hula Hoop world. Their workshops not only improved my hoop dance but also inspired me to become a Hula Hoop Instructor. At the end of my year in Ireland I returned home to Winnipeg, Canada; but I knew I was not finished traveling. After a quick year home, I was off to New Zealand in November 2013. By January 2014 I was selling my handmade hula hoops and casually teaching at a park in Auckland. I knew that Kurrent Motion was something I must pursue. I choose to live in Palmerston North, where a friend helped me become established offering me his spare room to stay in and helping me by creating my logo and other marketing media. By March 2014, I was hosting my first Introduction to Hula Hooping workshop. It was a great success! Within 6 months I had taught over 160 women the art of Hoop Dance. After nearly a year abroad, I returned home once again. Within those 3 years of traveling I visited 18 countries, often with my hoops.
